Escherichia coli is a gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that normally inhabits the poultry gut. While many E. coli strains are non-pathogenic, some acquire virulence factors and become pathogenic.

 

Birds suffering from E. coli become immunosuppressed and are more susceptible to other diseases, like;

Heat stress is imbalance between the heat production and the heat loss. Every age group and every type of poultry is susceptible to heat stress. The goal is to maintain the temperature within thermoneutral zone.

Thermoneutral zone is a zone where birds are not in stress and they can lose heat in a controlled way using normal behavior. When conditions mean the ‘upper critical temperature’ is exceeded, birds must lose heat actively by panting. Panting is a normal response to heat and is not initially considered a welfare problem.

A rise in temperature results in increased panting, helping the bird cope with heat stress. But if the temperature increases more than the maximum heat loss, it causes mortality in the birds. The body temperature of the broiler must remain very close to 41C (106F). If the body temperature rises more than 4°C, the bird will die.

CONSEQUENCES OF HEAT STRESS:


• Panting cools birds through evaporation, but excessive panting can cause fatigue and reduce heat tolerance.
• High humidity reduces evaporative cooling efficiency, and increased respiration affects blood chemistry.
• Prolonged panting can lead to lower growth rates and reduced egg production. Also leading to death.

Management:


1. Predict the weather: The very first step is to predict the weather by seeing the weather forecast. A trend can be seen which will allow you to make the management plan. Producers should also be aware of the climatic variation in their region.


2. Recognize the flock in heat stress: following are the symptoms shown by the birds in heat stress;


• Attempt move away from other birds.
• Move against cooler surfaces, such as the block walls or into moving air streams.
• Lift their wings away from their bodies to reduce insulation and expose any areas of skin that have no feathers.
• Begin to pant slowly.
• Rest to reduce heat generated by activity.
• Reduce feed intake.
• Increase water consumption.
• Divert blood from internal organs to the skin, which darkens skin color.
• Begin fast panting.


3. Ventilation: We can manage heat in the farm through air flow. Using outside air is the principle method of removing heat from the farm. Increasing ventilation to remove heat from the birds should be your first priority.


4. Feeding: Some points that should be kept in mind in terms of feeding.


• Feed removal: the removal of feed prior to the hottest part of the day is beneficial and it has recorded to lower the mortality. Reduced feed intake is a natural response to heat stress. This lowers metabolic heat, which in turn reduces feed conversion efficiency and growth rates.
• Reintroduction of feed: Reintroducing food too soon can lead to a surge in activity, which may be harmful if the birds haven’t fully recovered from heat stress.Stockmen should carefully monitor bird behavior and timing when reintroducing food.


5. Water: During heat stress, birds will increase their water intake by 2 to 4 times their normal intake. Sufficient cool water should be available all the time.
